INTERNATIONAL DARK-SKY ASSOCIATION

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is the recognised authority on light pollution and is the leading organisation combating light pollution worldwide.

Artificial light at night has revolutionised the way we live and work outdoors, but it has come at a price. When used indiscriminately, outdoor lighting can disrupt wildlife, impact human health, waste money and energy, contribute to climate change, and block our view of the universe.

Since 1988, IDA has led a movement to protect night from light pollution. Together, we have made significant strides.

* More than 1,000 dark sky certified lighting fixtures are available in the marketplace.

* IDA has designated 170 International Dark Sky Places, protecting over 110,000 sq km of dark places around the globe.

* IDA has 66 chapters operating in 17 countries.

* IDA has supported 23 dark sky communities in adopting strong lighting policies.

The Dales is famous for its wonderful scenery.  Deep valleys, known as dales, with roads meandering between drystone walls and a patchwork of hay meadows and field barns.  Up above is heather moorland and distinctive hills, such as the much loved Three Peaks.
